Mr. Ossen and His Philanthropy

All of us at Windham Hospital are saddened by the loss of our friend and benefactor, Jeffrey P. Ossen. Mr. Ossen lost his battle with cancer on September 15, 2007. In March 2005, Jeffrey P. Ossen, President of Stonegate Manor, increased his original pledge of $100,000 to the hospital's Emergency & Outpatient Services Expansion Project to $500,000 as the hospital prepared to break ground on the project. This was the largest single gift by a living donor in the Hospital's history.

As a result of this gift, the new Emergency Department, completed in August, 2006, was named in his honor to recognize this exceptional contribution in perpetuity.

Mr. Ossen was a long-time supporter of the hospital. At the time of the gift, he commented, "I made this donation because I believe so strongly in the importance of Windham Hospital to the entire community. Windham Hospital gave life to my three beloved children, who were born there over thirty years ago. And its Emergency Department literally saved my life just three months ago. It is critical to community health care in the Windham Region that this greatly expanded and improved Emergency Department be built just as soon as possible."

Jeffrey P. Ossen, 1940-2007

Mr. Ossen was known both locally and internationally for his philanthropy and provided critical funding for the musical programs at the North Windham School. He showed his generosity to numerous other causes including the international relief charity, CARE.

Mr. Ossen served as a Corporator of Windham Hospital from 1991 to 2007, and was a member of the Board of Directors from 1994 to 2002. He also served on the hospital's Finance Committee. He also served as the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Windham Hospital Foundation, Inc.

A native of Torrington, CT, Ossen studied political science at the University of Connecticut and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He obtained his Juris Doctor Degree from Harvard Law School in 1965 and then returned to UConn, earning a Masters Degree in Political Science. Ossen taught at UConn in 1967 as an Assistant Professor of Business Law and went on to establish a private law practice in Mansfield. Soon afterwards, he began his career as the owner and developer of Stonegate Manor, a manufactured housing community, in North Windham. Ossen resided in Mansfield, Connecticut and Singer Island, Florida with his wife, Eileen.
