Radiology School - Overview

Established in 1964, Windham Hospital's Program of Radiologic Technology is a full-time, 22 month program for students interested in a career in Medical Imaging. The Program starts a new class in September of each year.

Following the successful completion of all Program requirements, students may sit for the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. This examination is also accepted by the State of Connecticut for licensing purposes and a minimum grade of 75 is required to pass.



Academics
All students must attend the Program on a full-time basis. Class is held two days a week in the Professional Building, Suite 104, located on the Windham Hospital campus from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. During Orientation, class is held Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Clinical
Clinical is three days a week which starts after Orientation and consists of assignments within diagnostic imaging departments. Hours depend on the clinical site and specific rotations, however, start times generally range between 7 am - 9 am and last for 8.5 hours with a half-hour given for lunch.

  • At no time will the student exceed 40 hours of combined clinical and classroom involvement in a given week.

    Radiologic Technologists
    Radiologic Technologists are integral members of the healthcare team, belonging to a profession with constantly expanding horizons. The great advances in computer science during the past few decades have made the profession one of the most interesting and fastest growing fields in medicine.

    Career Opportunities
    Registered radiologic technologists are employed in various settings such as hospitals, medical clinics, physicians' offices, mobile imaging companies, industrial plants, research centers, and in sales and marketing. Locally, entry-level salaries for hospital staff radiographers range from $42,000 - $46,000 per year.

    Radiologic technologists may specialize in the following areas:
    • Computed Tomography (CT)
    • Mammography
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
    • Cardiovascular/Interventional
    • Bone Densitometry
    Opportunities for advancement also arise in management, research, and education.

    A job shadowing experience is recommended for those applying to the Program.

    Academic Calendar
    The Program observes the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas, New Year's Day, President's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July Fourth, Labor Day and Columbus Day.

    Vacations are to be taken in accordance with the Program Schedule. Students receive the week off between Christmas and New Year's Day, the last week in April and the first full week in July.

    The students receive an additional 128 hours of personal/sick time which is divided evenly into the four semesters.

    The Program's curriculum is designed to conform to that recommended by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
