Collaborating with families, acknowledging their strengths and resources, and respecting their choices and priorities are the cornerstones of Family Centered Care at Windham Hospital.
Family Centered Care is an evolving process based on a philosophy of family empowerment. This system-wide approach to healthcare recognizes that family members hold essential information that can enhance a patient's care. Collaborating with families, acknowledging their strengths and resources, and respecting their choices and priorities are the cornerstones of Family Centered Care.
As we enter a new age of healthcare, Windham Hospital is building a partnership that recognizes the expertise of patients and families and healthcare professionals. One way we do this is by creating Advisory Councils which establish a formal mechanism to capture patient and family input and perspectives and involve them in policy and program decision-making.
If you are interested in learning more about one of our councils or becoming involved please contact Mary Horan 860.456.6766.

Take a look at some of our recent accomplishments:
Child-friendly waiting area in Emergency Department.
If visiting the emergency department with children, be sure to take advantage of our pediatric waiting area designed by families with children. There you will find a magical wall mural with hidden treasures for children to find. Games and reading materials help occupy young minds and create a more child-friendly environment
Family Guidelines for Using Emergency Services - a guide written by families for families. -Family guidelines to ED Services.
Creating a family and staff liaison position which will help families become familiar with the Critical Care Unit when a loved one has been admitted.
The role of family liaison was created to help make the transition into the Critical Care Unit (CCU) less stressful for families. The purpose of this role is to help families become more familiar with CCU procedures. A volunteer is available to orient you to the general hospital and its services. He/she can give families visiting from out of town information about the resources available in the surrounding community and help family members communicate to staff any issues or concerns that may arise.
The Community Health Resource Center
Open from 6 am until 10 pm. Located on the 2nd floor between the Greer Wing and the Ambulatory Care Unit. This is a place for families to research information, access web-based medical resources and spend some quiet time, as needed.
